How to Make a Bed Like a Hotel: Sheets, Corners and Pillows

A hotel bed looks crisp because of a few simple choices: a tight bottom layer, smooth white sheets, layered covers and plenty of pillows. Here's how to make one, step by step.

What makes a hotel bed look like a hotel bed

If you want to make a bed like a hotel, start with what you see when you walk into a good room: white linen with no wrinkles, a bottom layer pulled tight, a smooth top, and more pillows than you need. Every room in the hotel looks the same, because every bed is made the same way.

None of that needs special furniture. It comes from the layers you use, the order you put them on, and linen that is clean and pressed.

Start with the base layers

Begin with a mattress protector. It keeps the mattress clean and gives the sheets a smooth surface to sit on. Pull it straight so there are no ridges under the sheet.

Next comes the bottom sheet. Many hotels use a flat sheet here instead of a fitted one, because flat sheets fit different mattress depths, fold neatly and press well. If you use a flat sheet, center it, tuck the head and foot under the mattress, and finish the corners with hospital corners.

How to make hospital corners

With the sheet tucked at the foot, take the loose sheet at one side, about a foot from the corner, and lift it up onto the mattress so it forms a triangle. Tuck the part that hangs below it under the mattress.

Then drop the triangle back down over the side and tuck it under as well. You get a clean, diagonal fold at the corner that holds the sheet tight. Repeat on each corner, then run your hand across the bed to smooth it.

The top layers

Lay the top sheet with the finished side facing down, so the nicer side shows when it is folded back. Add a blanket or a duvet insert, then the duvet cover or a second sheet over it.

Many hotels use the triple-sheeting method: a duvet insert held between two flat sheets instead of inside a cover. It makes changing the bed faster, because the sheets go to the laundry and the insert stays. Finish by folding the top layers back about a foot at the head of the bed, so the sheet shows as a clean white band.

Pillows, the hotel way

A king bed usually gets four sleeping pillows, two per side, and a queen gets two to four. Put pillowcases on with the open end facing away from the door and the center of the bed, so the room looks finished from the entrance.

Stand the back pillows against the headboard and lay the front ones flat or lean them on top. Decorative shams and a bed runner are optional, but they add the layered look many guests expect.

The secret is pressed linen

The crisp, flat look of a hotel bed is mostly about the linen itself. Hotel sheets and pillowcases go through a commercial flatwork ironer that presses them smooth in seconds, something an iron at home can only imitate.

At home, take sheets out of the dryer while they are still warm and fold them right away, or iron the pillowcases and the fold-down edge of the top sheet. For a hotel, pressing is part of a good bedding service, so every bed starts with linen that is already crisp.

FAQ

Common questions

Do hotels use fitted sheets?

Some do, but many hotels use flat sheets for both the bottom and top layers. Flat sheets fit different mattress depths, fold and press more easily, and make inventory simpler because one size serves two layers.

How do hotels get their sheets so smooth?

Hotel sheets are washed and then pressed on commercial flatwork ironers, which press and fold them in seconds. Tight hospital corners and a smooth mattress protector keep the bed looking flat once it is made.

What is the fold-down at the top of a hotel bed?

It is the top sheet folded back over the blanket or duvet, about a foot from the headboard. It shows a clean white band of sheet and makes the bed look ready for the guest to get in.
