What towels do hotels use?

The woven dobby border is not decoration: it holds the hem together through hundreds of commercial washes.

A guest bathroom is stocked as a set: a bath towel, a hand towel, a washcloth and a bath mat. Resorts add pool towels, and spas add heavier robes and treatment towels.

What size is a standard hotel bath towel?

Most hotel bath towels measure about 27 x 54 inches. Upscale and luxury hotels often step up to 30 x 56 inches, and some offer a bath sheet of about 35 x 70 inches. Budget properties sometimes stock a smaller 24 x 50 inch towel to save on cost and on laundry weight.

The rest of the set follows a standard pattern: a hand towel is about 16 x 30 inches, a washcloth about 13 x 13 inches, a bath mat about 20 x 30 inches, and a pool towel about 30 x 60 or 35 x 70 inches.

Sizes vary by an inch or two between mills, so reorder the size you already stock. Mixed sizes on one shelf slow down folding and make rooms look inconsistent.

Bath towel or bath sheet: what is the difference?

A bath sheet is a larger bath towel, usually 35 x 60 inches or more. Guests like the extra coverage, but a bath sheet weighs half again as much as a standard bath towel, and that weight goes through the laundry after every stay.

What does GSM mean in towels?

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It measures how dense and heavy the terry is, and it is the best single number for comparing two towels.

Towels of 300 to 400 GSM are light and dry fast, which suits gyms and budget rooms. Towels of 400 to 600 GSM are the hotel range: soft and absorbent, but still quick to launder. Towels of 600 to 800 GSM are spa and luxury weight, very plush, and slow to dry.

A higher GSM is not always better for a hotel. A towel that takes much longer to dry uses more energy and slows the whole laundry rotation, so most hotels pick the GSM that balances guest comfort with laundry time.

How much does a hotel towel weigh?

Weight follows size and GSM. A standard 27 x 54 inch bath towel at 550 GSM weighs a little over 1 pound. A hand towel weighs about 5 ounces, a washcloth about 2 ounces, and a bath sheet or a large pool towel close to 2 pounds.

This matters because commercial laundry is usually priced by the pound. Towels are often the heaviest part of a room's linen, so the size and GSM you choose show up in the cost of every room night. Keeping pool towels on their own count also keeps that cost easy to track.

How do hotel towels stay white and soft?

Softness comes from what is left out. Commercial laundries usually skip liquid fabric softener on towels, because it coats the terry loops and cuts absorbency. Soft water, a complete rinse and proper tumble drying do the work instead.
