How to Fold Towels Like a Hotel: Bath, Hand and Washcloth

Hotel towels look neat because every one is folded the same way. Here is the classic hotel fold for bath towels, hand towels, washcloths and mats, plus the rolled fold for spa and pool towels.

Why hotel towels look so neat

When you fold towels like a hotel, the goal is sameness. Every towel of a type is the same size, folded the same way, with the folded edge facing out and the hems tucked out of sight. A shelf of identical stacks reads as clean and cared for before a guest touches anything.

Fold towels when they are fully dry and still warm from the dryer. Warm fibers lie flat and fold without creases, and a towel folded slightly damp will smell musty on the shelf.

The classic hotel bath towel fold

Lay the bath towel flat, long side facing you, and smooth it out. Fold one long side to the middle, then fold the other long side over it, so the towel is in thirds lengthwise and both hems are hidden inside.

Now fold it in half from the short end, and then in half again, or in thirds if your shelf is shallow. Turn the stack so the smooth folded edge faces out. That edge is what guests see, so it should be the same on every towel.

To hang a bath towel on a bar, stop after the first step. Drape the towel folded in thirds over the bar so both ends hang evenly.

Hand towels, washcloths and bath mats

Fold hand towels the same way as bath towels: in thirds lengthwise, then in half. They can sit on the counter, hang on a ring or stack next to the sink.

Washcloths are usually folded into a square, in half and then in half again, or rolled. Bath mats are folded in half and then in thirds, and often draped over the tub edge so the guest finds them at once.

Rolled towels for spa and pool

Spas and pools often roll their towels. Fold the towel in half or in thirds lengthwise, then roll it tightly from the short end. Rolls fit well in baskets, cubbies and pool carts, and guests can take one without pulling apart a stack.

Because pool towels turn over many times a day, rolled towels also make it easy to see at a glance how many are left before the next delivery.

Towel art and turndown touches

Some resorts fold towels into swans, hearts or other shapes for honeymoon rooms, cruises and special stays. These are a nice touch for an occasion, but they take time, so most hotels keep them for turndown service or VIP rooms rather than every room.

Common towel folding mistakes

The most common mistake is folding towels before they are fully dry. The center of a thick towel dries last, and a towel folded damp will smell musty on the shelf within a day.

Others are easy to spot from the doorway: hems showing on the outside, stacks that mix two sizes, and folded edges that face different ways. Uneven towels also make it hard to count a stack quickly, which matters when a housekeeper is stocking a cart. Fix them with one written standard, one photo in the linen room, and a quick check during room inspections.

Folding at hotel volume

A hotel folds hundreds or thousands of towels a week, so the fold has to be fast and written down. Pick one fold per towel type, show it in a photo in the linen room, and train every new housekeeper on the same standard.

If you outsource your laundry, ask your partner to return towels folded to your standard and stacked by type, so housekeepers can move them straight to carts and shelves. Clean, soft towels matter as much as the fold: our guide on getting towels white again covers how hotels keep them that way.

FAQ

Common questions

Why do hotels fold towels in thirds?

Folding in thirds lengthwise hides both hems inside the fold, so every towel shows the same smooth edge. It also makes towels a uniform width that stacks neatly and hangs evenly on a bar.

Is it better to fold or roll towels?

Folded towels look neater on shelves and racks. Rolled towels work better in baskets, spa cubbies and pool carts, where guests take one at a time. Many hotels use both, depending on the area.

How do hotels keep towels fluffy?

They wash with the right amount of chemistry, skip heavy fabric softener that coats the fibers, and dry towels completely in large tumble dryers. Folding them warm from the dryer also helps them stay soft and flat.

Rather not deal with it in-house?
